Shaving Brushes

The modern shaving brush has its origins in France around the 1750s.They were made from a variety of materials, the bristles coming most commonly from badger, boar or horse hair. The handles came from exotic materials such as ivory and precious metals. This made them expensive items.

Today the modern brushes are still made from a variety of materials.

The handles we make come from acrylic and wood, the bristles we use are badger hair as well as synthetic material.

The brushes we make from synthetic hair, are made of nylon.

All our badger hair comes from China, as does most commercial badger hair; badgers are plentiful in the north of China, where the animal is actually part of the food chain!

A shaving brush’s price is determined by its bristle type; more than any other factor.

The qualities required from a brush to give a pleasant shaving experience are the softness of the bristle and its ability to retain water, thereby being able to produce  lather quickly. Badgers hair does this very well.

Badger hair brushes come in a variety of grades; there is no industry standard for the grading of brushes.

A commonly accepted classification for brush grades is Pure, Best, Super and Silvertip.

Pure Badger

These bristles come from the underbelly. The hair varies in softness and colour and is usually the darkest bristle; and is more plentiful than other grades, about 60% of the hair. The bristle is the coarsest of the grades and consequently costs less than other types.

Best Badger

Brushes made from this grade use the finer and more pliable hairs, about 20% of the available bristle.

The brushes are made with a more densely filled knot and are usually lighter in colour. With more hairs they produce a greater lather.

Super Badger

This grade uses the bristles that “best” badger uses, however they have been graded and sorted, to give a superior performance. The brushes are softer and less prickly .Sometimes the bristles are bleached to more closely resemble, the prized silvertip bristles.

Silvertip Badger

This is the most expensive and rarest type of hair, the tips are naturally white. The brushes are flared which gives the brush a fluffy appearance. It is capable of holding large amounts of water, and so the silvertip brush can form a rich lather quickly and easily. It is softer to the feel, and gives a very pleasant shaving experience.

The more water a brush holds the moister and richer the lather will be, the greatest benefit of a shaving brush is that it moistens and lifts the facial hair. Good rich lather will reduce the razor dragging and skipping across the face.
