Fill &  Maintain your Fountain Pen

Your pen will have an ink supply, delivered by one of two methods.

Either by using the familiar International short cartridge or by the piston ink reservoir (ink converter).

To change an ink cartridge

Take the cap off; unscrew the nib section to reveal the cartridge.

Pull the spent cartridge off and discard. Replace with a new one, and push into the section (making sure the cartridge is the right way round!) until you feel a little bump, which tells you that cartridge has been pierced.

If the pen is dry because it hasn’t been used for a while or the pen is new and this is the first time you are using it, the ink may not flow.

The pen must be primed, give the cartridge a slight pinch to force ink down to the point, or shake the pen gently or lay the nib onto a wet tissue to get the ink to flow by capillary action.

One of these methods will work and it really doesn’t take very long.

Hold the pen at the angle you write at and scribble, eventually the ink will flow and when the lines have a solid colour the pen is ready for use. Reassemble and use.

The more you do it the quicker you will get at it!

If you’re using the pen with a piston style ink reservoir, make sure the ink converter is pushed firmly into the end of the nib section.

Immerse the nib into a bottle of ink; just enough to cover the nib, then wind the piston so that it is at the top of the chamber. Turn the knurled end of the piston the opposite way to send it down the tube then wind the plunger up and the tube will fill with ink.

You may need to do this a couple of times to disperse as much air as possible. When the reservoir is full of ink, turn the piston end to dispel a couple of drops of ink.

This will ensure that any vacuum or air that has built up in the pens feed has been dissipated. The pen is now primed.

Wipe the nib of any surface ink, reassemble the pen, and check that it writes as you want.
